I. Pre-Listening Exercise [Top]

Check the meanings of the following words and expressions:

  • Everyday use
  • passive mode of accessing information fails
  • transmit geographic-based information
  • receive updated information in a timely manner
  • GIS-based architecture

Consult page 89 of Writing Effective Work Proposals by Ted Knoy for some of these definitions.

2. Write a problem statement for your work or research project (6 – 8 sentences). View the accompanying two Power Point presentations on details of how to write this assignment.

3. Write four questions beginning with “How” when discussing the problem to be solved or addressed in your work or research, and then answer them. The question does not have to come directly from the listening exercise.
Example: How will the inability to receive updated information in a timely
manner affect PDA use?
Answer: It will severely limit the range of use of PDAs.
Example: How will this problem affect researchers in this field if left unsolved?
Answer: It will severely limit industrial applications of this technology?
